Use a regular keyboard or an arcade stick. DualShock and DualSense controllers aren't ergonomical on difficult notecharts.
Analog sticks can simulate turntables.
A keypad suits these games if jumping and stomping annoy your housemates and neighbors. Friday Night Funkin' still sucks, though.
You can actually spam inputs faster with an ordinary gamepad (lol).
The gameplay fits regular keyboards and DualShock controllers perfectly.
A twin-stick controller works the most.
If the controller has an analog stick, it's playable.
I usually map all of the buttons to a keyboard. A Dreamcast, DualShock, or 8BitDo controller will drive you bonkers in 9-button mode.
An arcade stick's buttons work just as well.
osu! is intended to suit mice just as well, though your mileage may vary.
